In a solemn and poignant tribute to the heroes who responded to the tragic events of 9/11, National Public Safety Honor Day is set to take place on December 5, 2023. This annual event will honor the selflessness and bravery of these dedicated individuals, particularly the firefighters who have shouldered the lasting impact of those terrorist attacks. The heartwarming occasion will feature a joint award ceremony held in front of the 43rd Precinct, extending an open invitation to all New Yorkers to join and commemorate these extraordinary figures.

In his words, Sheikh Musa Drammeh, a founding member of the organizing committee, “In the English language, the two most powerful words often go unspoken, but on this day, they take center stage: “THANK YOU.” There are few individuals who merit this expression of appreciation more than the men and women who commit their lives to protect our homes and families around the clock.”

On this annual day of recognition, precincts across the city will receive well-deserved commendations, proclamations, and citations from their elected representatives. The event organizers are calling on members of the clergy, community leaders, and educators to stand alongside the public safety personnel in their communities and participate in these meaningful celebrations.

An annual tradition, Peace December, unfolds every first Tuesday of December. It is a collective effort by a coalition of organizations, including TBS New Direction, the Bangladeshi American Community Council, the Islamic Cultural Center of North America, The Bronx Youth, the Interfaith Coalition For Peace and Public Safety, Community Board 9, 43rd Precinct Council, Senator Nathalia Fernandez, Senator Luis Sepulveda, Assemblyman Kenneth Burgos, Councilwoman Amanda Farias, Al Shaib Community Center, Lifestyle Lifespan, the National Community Peacebuilding Commission, Muslim Media Corporation, and Parkchester Times. Alongside dedicated sponsors, this united force hosts the event at the 43rd Precinct. The day’s activities include a plaque dedication, floral tributes, and a press conference aimed at inspiring New Yorkers to express their gratitude to the vigilant public safety personnel who tirelessly ensure their safety 24/7.

According to the organizer, “Gratitude can be expressed in numerous ways. People can offer flowers and roses, write heartfelt appreciation letters, extend handshakes, give tokens of gratitude, create messages of thanks through artistic means like drawings and paintings, and engage with the media, social platforms, or personal phone calls. Notably, Rainbow Florist and Alex’s Flower will generously contribute to the event”.

Residents and business owners of Bronx Community Board 9 and the 43rd Precinct are expected to participate in the ‘Appreciation Walk.’ Starting at 12:00 PM, the walk commences from Virginia Park, located adjacent to the Parkchester Number 6 Train Station, and culminates at the 43rd Precinct. The event includes a brief ‘Thank You’ press conference in front of the precinct, attended by elected officials, clergy members, residents, and sponsors. It’s a family-friendly event, offering a unique opportunity to foster strong relationships with our law enforcement community.

Reflecting on the significance of the day, Drammeh noted, “This is an opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to the tireless public safety heroes who unwaveringly safeguard our city, day and night.”
