NYC Health + Hospitals achieves milestones in 2023
NYC Health + Hospitals has concluded a remarkable year, unveiling a myriad of achievements that underscore its commitment to providing top-notch healthcare services. President and CEO, Mitchell Katz, MD, expressed gratitude to the dedicated staff who contributed to the health system’s success.
The highlights of NYC Health + Hospitals’ accomplishments in 2023 include the inauguration of the state-of-the-art $923 million Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health. This 11-story facility, designed to endure a 500-year storm, became operational after a meticulous patient transfer operation.
Responding to the asylum seeker crisis, NYC Health + Hospitals played a pivotal role, offering shelter, healthcare, casework, and social services to tens of thousands of asylum seekers at humanitarian relief centers. The Arrival Center alone registered and provided medical services to over 85,000 asylum seekers since May.
The health system received accolades for its commitment to delivering award-winning, high-quality care. Noteworthy recognitions include Newsweek ranking Seaview as the #1 Nursing Home in New York State and NYC Health + Hospitals being honored by the American Heart Association and American Medical Association for excellence in various healthcare domains.
In a groundbreaking move, NYC Health + Hospitals became the first public health system in the nation to launch telehealth abortion access through Virtual ExpressCare. This innovative approach further solidifies the health system’s position as a pioneer in healthcare services.
As part of its ongoing efforts, NYC Health + Hospitals expanded services, launched new programs, and advocated for funding to enhance medical equipment and structural upgrades. Notable initiatives include the Lifestyle Medicine Program’s citywide expansion, the introduction of plant-based meals as the primary dinner choice, and the establishment of an Extended Care Unit at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County.
NYC Care, the health system’s initiative to provide comprehensive care, neared the milestone of 125,000 members. A collaborative effort with the Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit successfully engaged 30,000 NYC Care members, ensuring they scheduled primary care appointments.
NYC Health + Hospitals’ impact extended beyond healthcare, with initiatives like the Arts in Medicine department’s Community Mural Project, bringing vibrant murals to various facilities. The health system also addressed societal issues by providing debt relief to behavioral health providers and participating in campaigns to destigmatize procedures like colonoscopies.
