US releases final package of authorized military aid for Ukraine
The US government revealed the final allocation of authorized military aid for Ukraine. The State Department labeled this as the conclusive package available under the current authorization, emphasizing that Congress must swiftly decide on further support for Kyiv in its struggle against the Russian invasion.
President Joe Biden’s commitment to supporting Ukraine has been evident, with US weapons and financial aid playing a pivotal role in assisting the pro-Western nation against a larger Russian force.
The “year’s final package,” valued at up to $250 million, comprises air-defense and artillery munitions, including air-defense system components, ammunition for artillery rocket systems, anti-armor munitions, and over 15 million rounds of ammunition, as outlined by the State Department. The plea for prompt congressional action was underscored, especially given the split among Republicans regarding support for Ukraine.
While President Biden prioritizes aiding Ukraine, right-wing Republicans are pushing back, linking their support to stringent measures against illegal migration over the US southern border. The upcoming tranche of aid is crucial, and the State Department highlighted the involvement of “more than 50 countries” in the US-led coalition supporting Ukraine.
Acknowledging the aid, Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak expressed gratitude on social media, stating, “Thank you for your help. We will win.” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby emphasized that this impending drawdown of military aid is the final one, urging Congress to act promptly.
Attempts to secure a deal between Democrats and Republicans in December yielded little progress, and with Congress reconvening on January 8, the complex issue of immigration remains a significant obstacle to reaching an agreement.
The challenge is further compounded by the need for approval in the House of Representatives, where Republicans, influenced by a hard-right faction, maintain a narrow majority.
