Kyiv faces Russian drone attacks, missile warnings

0

Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, experienced fresh assaults from Russian drones, accompanied by ominous warnings of missile strikes from Moscow. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported explosions resonating through the city on Tuesday morning, revealing that drone wreckage ignited a fire in the Desnianskyi district near the center.

The threat extended beyond Kyiv, with air alerts sounding in other cities like Kherson and Mykolaiv. Recent days have witnessed significant aerial offensives from both Ukrainian and Russian forces. Mayor Klitschko confirmed that emergency services were addressing the consequences of drone-induced fires in the Desnianskyi district.

Further south, in Mykolaiv, the city’s mayor reported successful air defense measures against drones, resulting in debris causing fires within the urban area. Ukraine’s air force claimed on Telegram to have downed all 35 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) launched by Russia on Monday night. However, a troubling development followed as Ukraine reported multiple missile launches from Russia directed at areas including Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Kirovohrad.

In response to these escalating tensions, residents were urged to heed air raid sirens and seek shelter. The recent spate of attacks unfolded in the aftermath of Russia’s retaliation to a Ukrainian strike on the border city of Belgorod, where at least 25 people were killed and over 100 injured.

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to intensify strikes on military targets in Ukraine in response to the Belgorod incident. He also remarked on a perceived shift in Western rhetoric towards the war, suggesting that they were realizing the impossibility of “destroying” Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky countered Putin’s claims in an interview with The Economist, characterizing Russia’s perceived success in the war as a mere “feeling.” Zelensky highlighted Russia’s casualty figures in Ukraine and emphasized the resilience of Ukrainian forces, noting that no major city had fallen to the opposing forces in 2023. Expressing frustration, Zelensky criticized the perceived lack of urgency from Kyiv’s Western allies in the ongoing conflict.
