In a triumphant comeback at the Brisbane International, Naomi Osaka, former world number one and new mother, secured victory in her first match after a prolonged hiatus. Overcoming initial nerves, the four-time Grand Slam champion defeated Tamara Korpatsch 6-3, 7-6 (11/9) during a thrilling hour and 47-minute match on Pat Rafter Arena.

Expressing her excitement to be back on the court, Osaka acknowledged the challenge of facing a formidable opponent early in her return. Reflecting on her performance, she proudly stated, “Looking back on the match now, honestly I’m very proud of myself. I feel like I played at a pretty good level.”

After giving birth in July, Osaka rediscovered her passion for tennis and returned for the 2024 season. The match showcased her prowess as she swiftly claimed the first set but faced heightened pressure in the second as Korpatsch mounted a strong comeback. Despite a tense tiebreak, Osaka emerged victorious with a powerful forehand down the line.

Osaka attributed her changed perspective to motherhood, expressing gratitude for the support from fans and a newfound appreciation for fellow players. She emphasized a desire to reciprocate the love she receives, acknowledging the transformative impact of her daughter on her outlook.

In the men’s draw, top-seeded Holger Rune overcame an initial setback to defeat Max Purcell, while Grigor Dimitrov and Roman Safiullin showcased resilience in their victories over Andy Murray and Ben Shelton, respectively, in an action-packed day at the Brisbane International.
