In a tense struggle for control over Poland’s airwaves, the public broadcaster TVP finds itself at the center of a broader power play following the end of eight years of populist rule.

The conflict reached a critical point when the new culture minister dismissed top TVP management in response to accusations of partisan alignment under the previous right-wing government. The ensuing backlash saw opposition figures protesting the move, culminating in the occupation of TVP offices and a subsequent relocation of journalists to alternative studio spaces.

Despite the challenges, TVP Info, the 24-hour news channel, is back on air, albeit from constrained quarters. The flagship evening news show, rebranded as “19:30,” reflects a comprehensive overhaul aiming to distance itself from the divisive language of the past eight years. The editorial focus is now on presenting a more inclusive narrative, with a commitment to showcasing diverse perspectives, demonstrated through coverage of opposition protests.

The political polarization in Poland is evident in the public’s reaction, with protesters aligning themselves with the Law and Justice party (PiS) and portraying imprisoned former MPs as “political prisoners.” The broader political landscape remains turbulent, with promises from Prime Minister Donald Tusk to reverse controversial judiciary reforms meeting resistance from institutions like the Constitutional Tribunal.

Critics argue that public media, historically a PiS mouthpiece, has perpetuated biased narratives, leading the government to implement drastic measures such as liquidating public channels for restructuring. Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski defends the coalition’s actions, emphasizing the need for independent public media after years of alleged party influence.

Within the newly established TVP team, journalists face challenges such as hostility from some politicians and public backlash. Despite the tumult, editor Pawel Pluska remains committed to reshaping Polish TV, emphasizing the importance of fostering unity and presenting a more balanced narrative. As the media landscape evolves, the outcome of this battle for airwaves may significantly impact Poland’s political and social cohesion.
