In a significant move marking the National Football League’s (NFL) commitment to global expansion, the Philadelphia Eagles have been designated to participate in the league’s inaugural regular-season game in South America. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made the announcement on Monday, revealing that the game is scheduled for September 6th in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This historic event is slated to kick off the opening week of the 2024 NFL campaign, although the opponent for the Eagles is yet to be disclosed.

Goodell emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, “This landmark first international game in South America demonstrates the ongoing expansion of our global footprint.” The decision to stage the game on a Friday night during the opening week is viewed as a strategic move to spotlight the league’s international growth and aspirations. Notably, this will be the first time since 1970 that the NFL has scheduled a game on a Friday night during the opening week of the season.

The league had previously revealed its intention to hold a regular-season game in Brazil in 2024, underscoring its commitment to expanding its presence beyond traditional markets. The selected venue for this historic clash is the Corinthians Arena, a renowned stadium that hosted six matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Sao Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes hailed the NFL’s decision, expressing confidence in the city’s ability to serve as a fitting host.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ inclusion in this groundbreaking event underscores their pivotal role in the NFL’s global outreach efforts. Jeffrey Lurie, the team’s chairman and chief executive officer, conveyed his appreciation, stating, “We are honored to be a part of the NFL’s South America debut.” Lurie highlighted the importance of expanding the sport’s fan base worldwide and expressed eagerness to introduce Eagles football to the vast audience of sports enthusiasts in Brazil.

In addition to the Eagles’ participation in the Brazil game, several other NFL teams are slated to compete in international fixtures during the 2024 season. The Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, and Jacksonville Jaguars are scheduled to play in London, while the Carolina Panthers will take the field in Munich. These global engagements reflect the NFL’s proactive approach in cultivating a diverse and inclusive fan base while showcasing the excitement of American football on a global stage.
