In the California Senate primary, Congressman Adam Schiff and Republican contender Steve Garvey have emerged as the top contenders, as per CBS News projections.

The primary, marked by its extensive field of over twenty candidates, witnessed intense competition among aspirants from diverse political backgrounds aiming to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Senator Dianne Feinstein. Noteworthy challengers included Congresswomen Katie Porter and Barbara Lee.

The battle for California’s predominantly Democratic Senate seat has been fiercely contested, with candidates declaring their candidacies well in advance of Feinstein’s announcement. Given that the state’s other Senate seat is currently held by Democrat Alex Padilla, who succeeded Vice President Kamala Harris, opportunities for such prominent openings are infrequent.

Among the array of primary contenders, four prominent figures emerged. While Schiff maintained a consistent lead throughout the campaign, a recent UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll, conducted in conjunction with The Los Angeles Times, indicated Garvey’s emergence as a significant challenger, statistically tied for first place. Lee and Porter also mounted robust efforts to garner sufficient support for a berth in the November general election.

With Schiff and Garvey now poised to face off in November, polling data suggests Schiff enjoys a substantial advantage. The forthcoming general election will determine who will represent California in the Senate.
