Hamas announced on Saturday its deliberation over the latest Israeli counterproposal regarding a potential ceasefire in Gaza, amidst reports of intensified airstrikes and ongoing mediation efforts. The development follows a delegation from Egypt’s mediator arrival in Israel aimed at reinvigorating stalled negotiations.

The southern Gaza city of Rafah witnessed at least three Israeli airstrikes overnight, as reported by an AFP correspondent. The strikes targeted areas densely populated with Palestinians displaced by months of conflict, resulting in casualties, including several fatalities, according to hospital officials.

Khalil al-Hayya, deputy head of Hamas’s political arm in Gaza, confirmed the receipt of the Israeli response delivered through Egyptian and Qatari mediators on April 13. Al-Hayya stated that Hamas would carefully examine the proposal before presenting its response, maintaining its previous stance for a permanent ceasefire, which Israel has rejected.

Efforts to broker a new truce deal have been ongoing, with Egypt, Qatar, and the United States engaged in negotiations since the exchange of hostages between Israel and Hamas in November. Despite reported progress, recent discussions have been marred by mutual accusations of undermining the process.

As diplomatic efforts persist, casualties continue to mount in Gaza, with dozens reported dead daily. The conflict, which began with Hamas’s October 7 attack, has led to significant casualties on both sides, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The situation in Gaza will be a focal point at an upcoming international summit in Saudi Arabia, with a dedicated session planned to address the crisis. Meanwhile, Israel’s military has intensified its operations, targeting militant positions as demonstrations escalate within Israel demanding action to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza.

The ongoing violence underscores the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to the Gaza conflict, as regional tensions escalate and humanitarian conditions deteriorate. Amidst the chaos, international stakeholders continue their efforts to facilitate dialogue and achieve a lasting ceasefire agreement.
