Indonesia buys two submarines from France’s Naval Group
Indonesia has recently made a significant move in its defense capabilities by purchasing two Scorpene-class attack submarines from France’s Naval Group. This procurement is a part of a defense cooperation agreement that was established with Paris back in 2021. The decision to acquire these submarines comes in the wake of increasing tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.
In addition to this submarine deal, Indonesia has been actively engaging in agreements with French defense companies over the past few years. The 2021 agreement also includes the purchase of 42 Rafale fighter jets totaling $8.1 billion. The Scorpene submarines, known for their capacity to carry 18 torpedoes and missiles, will be constructed at the PT PAL shipyard in Indonesia, according to Naval Group.
Naval Group has emphasized that as part of the agreement, they will be transferring their technological expertise to Indonesia. The management, operation, and maintenance of these submarines will be in the hands of Indonesians, contributing to the creation of numerous long-term skilled job opportunities. Pierre Eric Pommellet, the CEO of Naval Group, expressed pride in being part of the strategic alliance between Indonesia and France.
The submarines are expected to enhance Indonesia’s maritime sovereignty and bolster the Indonesian Navy’s capabilities for regional sea dominance. This collaboration with PT PAL is not only about submarines but also aims to advance Indonesia’s defense industry in preparation for future naval warfare challenges. The Scorpene submarines, with their advanced technology, can dive up to 300 meters deep and operate underwater for over 12 days with a crew of 31 sailors.
Naval Group’s track record includes selling Scorpene submarines to various countries like India, Brazil, and Chile, showcasing their mastery in submarine technology. The recent submarine deal between Indonesia and France marks a significant step towards strengthening Indonesia’s defense capabilities and maritime presence in the region.
