OIC Banjul Summit concludes as Gambia assumes OIC chairmanship

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has concluded its 15th Islamic Summit in Banjul, The Gambia, with a press conference at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center.

The summit, held from 4th to 5th May 2024, was celebrated as one of the best-organized events in the history of the OIC, marking a significant achievement for The Gambia. Key officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister H.E. Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Information Minister Hon. Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, and OIC Gambia CEO Ambassador Yankuba Dibba, joined the press conference to discuss the summit’s success and its outcomes.

Ambassador Dibba, CEO of OIC Gambia, expressed satisfaction with the event’s seamless execution. He credited the comprehensive planning and dedicated efforts of the local organizing committee and the OIC Secretariat for the summit’s success. The Gambia’s hosting of the summit has elevated the nation’s profile on the global stage, positioning it as a key player in international diplomacy.

Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Mamadou Tangara extended his gratitude to those involved in organizing the summit, emphasizing the crucial support of President Adama Barrow and the dedication of Gambian citizens. He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of partner countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Mauritania, Senegal, Morocco, Turkiye, and Indonesia, which contributed to the event’s success through financial support and logistical assistance.

Hon. Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, the Minister of Information, commended President Barrow for assuming the OIC chairmanship for the next three years. Dr. Ceesay highlighted The Gambia’s commitment to addressing global challenges, advocating for humanitarian aid, and fostering international cooperation. He also praised the OIC Secretariat for its guidance and collaboration in ensuring a successful summit.

Mr. Nfally Fadera, Head of Brand and Communication for OIC Gambia, highlighted the involvement of Gambian companies in the summit, noting that 90% of the contracts were awarded to local businesses. The summit’s success underscored the capability and resourcefulness of Gambian enterprises, with contracts spanning logistics, transport, media, and other sectors.

In closing, the press conference celebrated the OIC Banjul Summit’s achievements and set the stage for The Gambia’s role as the chair of the OIC for the next three years. The event’s success reflects the nation’s readiness to contribute to the organization’s mission of promoting international cooperation and addressing the challenges facing the Islamic world.
