Councilman Fernando condemns shooting in Bronx, agitate for return of gun buy

The Bronx council members Fernando Cabrera has agiated for return of gun buy.

The agitation followed the shooting of a member of the NYDP, Officer Daniel Vargas, on Tuesday.

While condemning the shooting on Wednesday January 27 2021, Cabrera said, “Last night’s shooting of Officer Daniel Vargas, a six-year veteran of the NYPD and a member of the Gun Violence Suppression Division is a grim reminder of how important it is to get guns off our streets.

“Gun buy-back events have proven very effective in getting unlicensed guns off the streets, so it makes sense for this strategy to have a bigger role in ending gun violence. Making gun buy-back available 24/7 city-wide would strengthen our efforts.

“As a member of the New York City Council’s Task Force to Combat Gun Violence, I was instrumental, with now Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, in getting the initial $6.7 million to implement the Cure Violence program city-wide, and have provided $100,000 to B.R.A.G. (Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence) in my district.”

Cabrera also called for the federal support of anti-gun violence.

“I’m also renewing my call for federal funding of Cure Violence, which uses “credible messengers” to reach young people engaging in gun violence.

“I am thankful that Officer Vargas is expected to have a full recovery. I offer my prayers for his healing and continued service in the interest of peace and public safety,” he said.
