In a press conference in San Francisco, US President Joe Biden conveyed a strong message to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, cautioning against the occupation of Gaza and emphasizing the significance of a two-state solution for resolving the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Biden stated, “I made it clear to the Israelis I think it’s a big mistake for them to think they’re going to occupy Gaza and maintain Gaza. I don’t think that works.”

Netanyahu, addressing concerns earlier this month, outlined plans for Gaza’s demilitarization and rebuilding post-war, emphasizing the need for a civilian government. Despite Israel’s control of Gaza’s borders, airspace, and territorial waters, he denied any intention to “occupy” Gaza.

During ongoing military actions at Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital, Biden urged Israeli leaders to exercise extreme caution. He reiterated Israeli claims about the hospital housing a Hamas military headquarters, accusing Hamas of committing war crimes by locating such a facility beneath a hospital.

The raid on al-Shifa has drawn international condemnation, with the United Nations, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority expressing concern. Biden acknowledged the complexities under international humanitarian law, emphasizing Israel’s obligation to demonstrate that the hospital was a legitimate military target justifying the siege.

Addressing Israel’s mission in al-Shifa, Biden mentioned the search for captives, including a three-year-old US citizen, held in Gaza for over a month. Netanyahu, facing domestic pressure amid protests demanding action for their release, is under scrutiny for potential security lapses leading to the unprecedented Hamas attack.

Biden expressed mild optimism about a potential deal for the captives’ release, acknowledging cooperation from Qatar, which has been mediating between Hamas and Israeli officials.
